An entire decade of my photography journey. Full of real weddings, families, wedding planning tips, & more.
Rebecca & Bradley at home on the farm, 7.13.2024.
There is something about a backyard wedding that simply feels different. The history. The familiarity. The way every corner already means something long before the wedding day even begins. Rebecca & Bradley chose to celebrate their wedding at their family farm in Grayslake, Illinois surrounded by the people who know and love them best — creating an intimate outdoor wedding that felt deeply personal from beginning to end.
Their elegant neutral wedding design blended timeless details with the relaxed beauty of summertime in Northern Illinois. Soft white florals, layered greenery, black accents, flowing fabrics, and an open-air ceremony overlooking the water transformed the property into something that felt both elevated and entirely true to them. From emotional getting ready moments inside the family home to dancing under a tented reception at sunset, every part of their wedding day reflected the kind of celebration that matters most: meaningful, intentional, and fully centered around connection.
As an Illinois wedding photographer documenting weddings throughout Northern Illinois, McHenry County, Chicago, and Southern Wisconsin, backyard weddings like this always remind me why I love documentary wedding photography so much. Nothing feels staged. Nothing feels rushed. The entire day unfolds naturally — allowing space for real moments, movement, emotion, and the people surrounding it all.

Rebecca & Bradley’s Grayslake Illinois wedding took place entirely at home on their family farm, creating a wedding day that felt incredibly grounded and personal. The outdoor ceremony overlooked the water beneath a clean white ceremony arch filled with soft florals and greenery while guests sat beneath umbrellas during the warm July afternoon.
The neutral wedding color palette paired perfectly with the natural setting surrounding them. Bridesmaids wore soft olive satin dresses while Bradley and his groomsmen wore light tan suits that complemented the relaxed elegance of the day beautifully. Rebecca’s off-the-shoulder gown moved effortlessly throughout the entire wedding day — especially during their tented reception entrance and first dances later that evening.
One of my favorite parts of documenting backyard weddings in Illinois is the freedom couples have to truly make the day their own. Every detail throughout Rebecca & Bradley’s wedding felt intentional without ever feeling overdone. From their “Sip & Be Seated” champagne wall to the candlelit reception tables beneath the sailcloth tent, the design never competed with the experience itself — it simply enhanced it.

If you know my work, you know I’m always drawn toward the in-between moments just as much as the big ones.
The way Rebecca’s mom helped button her sleeves while quietly holding back tears. Bradley adjusting his bowtie in the mirror before the ceremony began. Guests cheering as the newly married couple made their reception entrance beneath the tent while napkins flew through the air around them. These are the moments that make a wedding gallery feel alive years later.
Documentary wedding photography allows couples to actually experience their wedding day instead of constantly performing through it. Rebecca & Bradley’s wedding was full of movement, laughter, emotion, and presence — the exact kind of atmosphere I love photographing as a Northern Illinois wedding photographer.
As the sun began setting over the property, guests transitioned into the sailcloth tent for dinner and dancing beneath string lights. Their tented reception felt warm, energetic, and incredibly inviting — balancing elevated design with the comfort of celebrating at home.
One of the best things about hosting a backyard wedding in Illinois is the ability to create an experience that feels fully immersive for guests. Rather than moving between venues throughout the day, everyone remained together on the property from start to finish. The result was a wedding day that felt relaxed, connected, and deeply intentional.
Their reception entrance immediately set the tone for the evening. Rebecca & Bradley entered the tent laughing, dancing, and completely themselves while guests celebrated around them. It perfectly reflected the energy of the entire day: joyful, emotional, and entirely unfiltered.
Backyard weddings throughout Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin hold such a special place in my heart. Whether you’re planning a family farm wedding in Grayslake, an intimate backyard wedding in McHenry County, or an outdoor tented wedding somewhere tucked into the countryside, there’s something incredibly meaningful about getting married in a place already tied to your story.
As a documentary wedding photographer serving Illinois, Wisconsin, Chicago, Lake Geneva, and surrounding areas, my approach is always rooted in helping couples stay present while documenting the moments exactly as they felt.
If you’re currently planning your own Grayslake Illinois wedding, backyard wedding, outdoor tented reception, or family farm wedding celebration, I would absolutely love to hear more about your plans.
