An entire decade of my photography journey. Full of real weddings, families, wedding planning tips, & more.

If you’re newly engaged and somewhere deep in a Google rabbit hole trying to figure out if wedding photography is going to blow your entire budget — hi. I’m Nicole. And I’m going to give you a real answer on how much wedding photography typically costs in Illinois and Wisconsin.
In 2026, most full-day wedding photography from an experienced photographer falls somewhere between $3,500 and $8,000+ — with the majority of couples landing between $4,500 and $6,500 for 8 hours of coverage.
That range exists because wedding photography isn’t a commodity. You’re not buying a preset number of deliverables. You’re booking a specific person for one specific day — and the cost reflects their experience, what they include, how they run their business, and what they actually do on your day beyond pointing a camera at you.
More on that in a second.

This is the biggest driver. A 2-hour courthouse ceremony is a very different job than a 10-hour full day that starts with getting ready and ends at last dance. Most photographers price by the hour above or below a base package, so the longer the day, the higher the number.
For reference: a typical 8-hour wedding day in the Chicago suburbs, Northern Illinois, or Lake Geneva covers about 1 hour of getting ready through 30–60 minutes of dancing at the reception. That’s the baseline most full-day photographers build around.
Experience isn’t a flex. It’s functional.
An experienced photographer has handled dark reception spaces, outdoor ceremonies in direct noon sun, timeline chaos, rain, vendor conflicts, family dynamics, and every other plot twist a wedding day can throw at you — without adding stress to yours.
You’re not paying for a portfolio. You’re paying for what happens when something goes sideways and they don’t flinch.
This is where packages diverge the most. Some photographers include engagement sessions, second photographers, travel, sneak peeks, planning support, and flexible payment plans. Others charge for each of those separately. Neither is wrong — but you need to read the details, not just the number at the top.
Most photographers have a free travel radius from their home base. Beyond that, expect a mileage fee. If your venue requires overnight travel — 2+ hours driving one way — expect a hotel stay and a daily travel stipend to be added. If it requires flights, you’re likely looking at a destination photography package where travel is all-inclusive.
Having two photographers at your wedding means two angles at every moment — getting ready in two separate rooms at the same time, ceremony shots from opposite ends of the aisle, candids during portraits you’d miss with one photographer. It’s typically a flat add-on fee, not a percentage of the package.

My wedding photography coverage (Illinois & Wisconsin, within 60 miles of Hebron, IL) starts at $6,000 for 6 hours. That includes:
You can also add: a second photographer, rehearsal/welcome dinner coverage up to 2 hours, or additional continuous coverage hours.
For courthouse weddings and elopements (Mon–Thurs only), coverage starts at $1,450 for 2 hours and is entirely customizable. I’m also ordained — I can sign the marriage license and mail it, if that’s useful.
For traveling and destination weddings — my wedding photography packages include travel within the continental United States. You save me a room in your hotel block. I handle everything else.

A $2,000 photographer and an $8,000 photographer are not delivering the same thing. That’s not a judgment on either. It’s just the reality of what experience, equipment, editing, business infrastructure, and presence on a wedding day actually cost.
Some things to look for regardless of budget: consistent editing, a clear contract, a photographer who communicates like a human being, and — honestly — someone whose work makes you feel something.
If you look at a gallery and think that’s how I want to remember my wedding day, that’s the answer. The number is a factor. It’s not the whole picture.
Earlier than you think.
Most photographers — including me — book 12–18 months out for peak wedding season (May–October). If your date is less than a year away, reach out as soon as you find someone you connect with. Availability disappears fast, especially for Saturdays.
Courthouse weddings and elopements have more flexibility since they’re weekday-only — but even those fill up as availability tightens.
I know every photographer says this. But here’s what I actually mean when I say it:
Your dress, your flowers, your food — you’ll have the memory of those things. Your photos are the only thing that outlasts the day itself. They’re what you hand to your kids. They’re what you look at on your 20th anniversary. They’re proof — that it happened, that it felt exactly like that, that you were really there.
That doesn’t mean you need to spend more than you have. It means you should spend what makes sense for you, with someone whose work genuinely moves you.
